Beautiful bunch

I had a bit of a moment today.  One of those movie moments but with food.  The kind where the guy walks into a bar and sees the most beautiful woman he’s ever laid eyes on.  Time slows for just a minute and all he can focus on is her.  Her beauty.  And at that moment he knows he just HAS to have her.  That was me today. With these.

Stop laughing.

Just look.  Look how pretty!

I know what you’re thinking.  They’re radishes! Really?!  I know, I thought it too.  I’ve never been a radish girl.  The first time I ever tried a radish I thought they were awful.  They had a weird flavor and they were hot.  No thanks!  Maybe I didn’t like them because I was a kid but I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve bought radishes as an adult.  I’ve tried to like them but there was just something about them that turned me off.

I still had to buy them though.  They were just too pretty to pass up.  I had no idea what I would do with them when I got them home but they still went into my cart. As I drove home began to think that I might have just thrown a few bucks away for the sake of “pretty”.  I’m far too frugal and stubborn for that to happen so it was time to get to thinking.

When I got home I sliced them up and popped one in my mouth raw.  Ugh! Same ole’ radish taste.  (sigh) So now what?!

No fancy ideas popped into my head so I went with my vegetable cooking stand by.  Roast them.  I kept it simple too.  I simply sliced the radishes in half, placed them on a sheet pan covered in unbleached parchment paper, added my oil and seasoning and tossed right there on the pan.  Not even one mixing bowl to clean.  Score!

Now some of you may be saying “duh” if you’ve had roasted radishes before but I hadn’t and I thought it was worth a try.  I’m so glad I did because they were DELICIOUS!  The typical radish taste that I disliked all these years vanished and what I was left with was a beautiful, crispy and slightly sweet roasted vegetable that is an amazing food for my gut.

Why are radishes so great for your gut?  For starters, they have antimicrobial properties which is great for healing a damaged digestive system.  Further more, they are an alkaline-forming food which is incredibly helpful in keeping pH balance in check.  In short, the good gut “buggies” like them and the bad ones don’t and that’s what we want folks.

I hope you’ll be like me and give radishes a place in your menu and in your gut.  If you like radishes already, leave me a comment with your favorite way to prepare them?
